The University of Minnesota, Morris and West Central Research and Outreach Center are committed to all aspects of renewable energy and sustainable living. This includes innovations in structural technologies. During the 2008 legislative session, the West Central Research and Outreach Center's Renewable Energy Building Addition received funding from the state legislature. This project is another step in the larger project referred to as the Renewable Energy Research and Demonstration Center at Morris.

The renovation of the existing Community Services building (formally the West Central School of Agriculture engineering building) will transform a historic building with "good bones" into a highly functional Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified gateway to the University of Minnesota, Morris.

Planning is now underway to build a new residential life facility at the University of Minnesota, Morris. The Green Prairie Learning and Living Community will provide contemporary undergraduate student housing for approximately 80 students in suite-style dwellings.
